Gomarus, Disputatio XXVIII: Pembenaran melawan kekeliruan kaum Romanis
Gomarus menolak pengertian kaum Romanis bahwa 'membenarkan' berarti menjadikan benar lewat pencurahan kebenaran yang melekat, lalu membahas pengampunan dosa, sebab-sebab pembenaran, jasa, dan keraguan.
Pendahuluan
As the orthodox doctrine of the justification of man before God is, beyond controversy, both illustrious and necessary to salvation, it must for that reason not only be faithfully handed on, but also be defended, steadfastly and prudently, against the enemies of the truth. Since, then, the foundations of the sound doctrine have elsewhere been set out fully enough and often enough, it seems not unfitting that we should bring the errors of the Romanists on this matter, stripped bare, onto the academic stage, and by setting against them the dogmas of the right view expose their foulness all the more plainly. For in this way, we judge, this subject can be debated with the adversaries more easily and more safely, and the sincere confession of the Church can be more readily recognised and defended. We therefore invite pious and learned hearers to a Christian συζήτησις ("joint inquiry," "disputation") on these matters.
Tesis I
I. VOcem Hebraeam tsiddek, vel hitsdic, Graecam δικαιόω (quam docendi causâ, conficto verbo, in Ecclesiâ Latinâ, justificare, interpretantur) in sacra scriptura, quum, de justificatione hominis, coram Deo, agitur, justum facere, infusione justitiae inhaerentis, denotare, Pontificii contendunt. Bellarminus de justif. lib. 1. cap. 1. & lib. 2. cap. 3. & 6. & lib. 4. cap. 18.
I. The Romanists contend that the Hebrew word tsiddek or hitsdic, and the Greek δικαιόω (which in the Latin Church, for the sake of teaching, they render by a coined word, justificare), denotes in Sacred Scripture, when the justification of man before God is in question, to make righteous by the infusion of inherent righteousness. Bellarmine, De justificatione, book 1, chapter 1; book 2, chapters 3 and 6; and book 4, chapter 18.
II. The Orthodox, on the contrary, hold that such an acceptation of the word is foreign [to it]. And although it seems probable to some that it is used in that sense somewhere in the Sacred Letters (where our justification before God is not the subject), and although that would not help the Romanists' cause one whit, we nonetheless, on the same ground, maintain the contrary position asserted by other orthodox [divines], as most true and better suited to rooting out entirely the errors of the Pontiff on this matter. For not a single passage can be adduced, either from Sacred Scripture or from the Apocrypha, from which that signification can be demonstrated with certainty, as will readily appear once each has been examined. Indeed, we have until now looked in vain to the champions of the Pope for examples of this signification drawn from approved profane authors of the Greek language.
II.
Tesis III
III. Utque in vocis hujus significatione, quasi in limine hujus dogmatis, impegerunt; sic, in rei significatae penetrali, gravius & copiosius offenderunt. Siquidem, praestitutâ justificationis, in primam & secundam, distributione, primam exponunt, quâ homo impius, seu nondum regeneratus, infusione justitiae, primum fit pius. Concil. Trident. Sess. 6. cap. 7. Bellarm. de justif. lib. 1. cap. 1. & lib. 2. cap. 3. & 6. & 15.
III. And as they stumbled over the signification of this word, at the very threshold, so to speak, of this dogma, so in the inner chamber of the thing signified they have gone astray more gravely and more extensively. For, having first laid down a division of justification into a first and a second, they explain the first as that by which an ungodly man, that is, one not yet regenerate, is first made godly by the infusion of righteousness. Council of Trent, Session 6, chapter 7; Bellarmine, De justificatione, book 1, chapter 1, and book 2, chapters 3, 6, and 15.
III.
Tesis IV
IV. Contra Orthodoxi docent, justificationem, hoc modo, in sanctificationem, seu regenerationem (à quâ, in Dei verbo, ut diversum beneficium, distinguitur) perversè commutari: eamque quum imperfecta sit (ut carnis, contra spiritum repugnantis, reliquiae contagiosae, demonstrant) nos neutiquam posse justificare.
IV. Against this the Orthodox teach that in this way justification is perversely exchanged for sanctification, that is, regeneration (from which, in the Word of God, it is distinguished as a different benefit); and that sanctification, since it is imperfect (as the contagious remnants of the flesh, warring against the spirit, show), can by no means justify us.
IV.
Tesis V
V. Hujus etiam justificationis partes, simili errore, constituunt, remissionem peccatorum; (ut terminum à quo, & internam hominis sanctificationem, seu infusionem, justitiae; ut terminum ad quem: unde justificatio, suum nomen acceperit; ut omnes similes notiones, illuminatio, calefactio &c. Concil. Trid. Sess. 6. cap. 7. Thomas 1. 2. quaest. 113. art. 6. Bellarm. de justif. lib. 1. cap. 1. & l. 2. c. 3. & 6. & 11. & 12.
V. By a like error they make the parts of this justification to be the remission of sins (as the terminus a quo) and the inward sanctification of man, that is, the infusion of righteousness (as the terminus ad quem), from which justification is supposed to have received its name, as do all similar notions such as "illumination," "calefaction" [heating], and so on. Council of Trent, Session 6, chapter 7; Thomas [Aquinas, Summa theologiae] I-II, q. 113, a. 6; Bellarmine, De justificatione, book 1, chapter 1, and book 2, chapters 3, 6, 11, and 12.
VI. The Orthodox, on the contrary, rightly distinguish sanctification from justification as a whole, as we have just said.
VI.
Thomas 1. 2. quaest. 110. art. 1. & quaest. 113. art. 2. Bellarmin. de justific. lib. 2. cap. 7. & 10. & 11. & 12. Gregorius de Valent. commentar. theolog. tom. 2. disp. 8. quaestione 5. puncto 5.
VII. The Romanists also impurely assert that the remission of sins is not the pardon of the penalty alone, but also the washing away and cleansing of the guilt, by which original sin and mortal [sins] are removed entirely and plucked out of the soul. Thomas, I-II, q. 110, a. 1, and q. 113, a. 2; Bellarmine, De justificatione, book 2, chapters 7, 10, 11, and 12; Gregory of Valencia, Commentarii theologici, vol. 2, disp. 8, question 5, point 5.
VII. 8, pertanyaan 5, butir 5.
Tesis VIII
VIII. Orthodoxi contra, remissionem peccati, à sanctificatione, sanctè distinguunt: & peccatum originis tolli, non penitus, sed partim, in hac vita, ex reliquiis illius noxiis, evincunt. Rom. 7. Gal. 5.
VIII. The Orthodox, on the contrary, scrupulously distinguish the remission of sin from sanctification; and they prove, from its noxious remnants, that original sin is removed in this life not entirely but only in part (Rom. 7; Gal. 5).
VIII.
Concil. Trident. Sess. 6. can. 17. Bellar. de justificatione lib. 3. cap. 14.
IX. The Romanists also spread the subject of justification wider than the streams of Scripture will carry it, and define it as being not the predestined to eternal life alone, but the reprobate as well. Council of Trent, Session 6, canon 17; Bellarmine, De justificatione, book 3, chapter 14.
IX. Konsili Trente, Sesi 6, kanon 17; Bellarminus, De justificatione, buku 3, pasal 14.
Tesis X
X. Contra verò Orthodoxi, solos ad vitam aeternam electos, justificari, Deo duce, agnoscunt.
X. The Orthodox, on the contrary, with God as their guide, acknowledge that only those elected to eternal life are justified.
1. cap. 10. & 13. & lib. 2. cap. 15. fidemque aliquo modo mereri justificationem. Idem de justif. lib. 1. cap. 17.
XI. The Romanists lay down as the efficient cause disposing to justification not faith alone, but the act of faith, of hope, of fear, of love, of penitence, and so on (Bellarmine, De justificatione, book 1, chapters 10 and 13, and book 2, chapter 15); and [they hold] that faith in some way merits justification (the same, De justificatione, book 1, chapter 17).
XI.
Tesis XII
XII. Contra Orthodoxi, praeviâ verbi divini luce, solam fidem id habere privilegii, non opera aliarum virtutum: nec mereri tamen ullo modo justificationem, constanter asserunt.
XII. The Orthodox, on the contrary, with the light of the divine Word going before them, steadfastly assert that faith alone has this privilege, not the works of the other virtues; and yet that it does not in any way merit justification.
XII.
Tesis XIII
XIII. Instrumentalis item causa, ut Concilium Tridentinum definit, est sacramentum Baptismi: quo nondum regeniti, Christum induentes, infusione fidei, spei, charitatis, nova prorsus in illo efficimur creatura, & integram peccatorum remissionem consequimur. Sess. 6. cap. 4. & 7. & Sess. 14. cap. 2.
XIII. Likewise the instrumental cause, as the Council of Trent defines it, is the sacrament of Baptism, by which we, not yet reborn, putting on Christ, are by the infusion of faith, hope, and charity made in Him an altogether new creature, and obtain the entire remission of sins. Session 6, chapters 4 and 7, and Session 14, chapter 2.
XIII.
XIV. This impure fabrication, as being adverse to the nature of the new covenant, of justification, and of the sacraments, the Orthodox purely reject.
XIV.
Tesis XV
XV. Causam formalem justificationis, simili errore, definiunt, esse justitiam habitualem infusam, nobis reipsa inhaerentem. Concil. Trident. Sess. 6. cap. 7. & can. 10. & 11. Bellarmin. de Justif. lib. 1. cap. 18. & lib. 2. cap. 12. & 15. Gregor. de Valen. Comment. Theol. tom. 2. disp. 8. quaest. 5. puncto 3.
XV. By a like error they define the formal cause of justification to be an infused, habitual righteousness, actually inhering in us. Council of Trent, Session 6, chapter 7, and canons 10 and 11; Bellarmine, De justificatione, book 1, chapter 18, and book 2, chapters 12 and 15; Gregory of Valencia, Commentarii theologici, vol. 2, disp. 8, q. 5, point 3.
XV.
1. cap. 17. & lib. 2. cap. 4.
XVI. To the same [end] belongs their explanation of this error: that the habit of faith is the inchoate formal cause of justification, but charity the consummating [formal cause]; and that this charity is the extrinsic form of faith, not its intrinsic form: one that gives to faith not that it be, but that it be moved. Bellarmine, De justificatione, book 1, chapter 17, and book 2, chapter 4.
XVI.
Concil. Trident. Sess. 6. cap. 10. Bellarm. de justif. lib. 2. cap. 15. & lib. 4. cap. 18.
XVII. As to the second justification, with the same progression of error they describe it as belonging to a man already justified, by which the righteous man is justified still further, that is, from righteous is made more righteous, by an increase of inherent righteousness. Council of Trent, Session 6, chapter 10; Bellarmine, De justificatione, book 2, chapter 15, and book 4, chapter 18.
XVII.
Tesis XVIII
XVIII. Hujus justificationis causam efficientem, merito suo, docent esse opera fidei, spei, charitatis &c. eaque hominem justificare meritoriè, ut loquuntur: quod augmentum justitiae promereatur. Concil. Trident. Sess. 6. cap. 10. & can. 24. & 32. Bellarmin. de justificat. lib. 1. cap. 19. & 2. 16. & l. 4. c. 18.
XVIII. They teach that the efficient cause of this justification is, by their own merit, the works of faith, hope, charity, and so on; and that these justify a man meritoriously, as they put it, in that [thereby] an increase of righteousness is merited. Council of Trent, Session 6, chapter 10, and canons 24 and 32; Bellarmine, De justificatione, book 1, chapter 19, [book] 2, [chapter] 16, and book 4, chapter 18.
XVIII.
Tesis XIX
XIX. Contra Orthodoxi eam sententiam, perfectae Christi gratiae, & operum nostrorum imperfectioni, è diametro repugnantem, meritò refutant.
XIX. The Orthodox, on the contrary, rightly refute that view as diametrically opposed both to the perfect grace of Christ and to the imperfection of our works.
XIX.
XX. Finally, the Romanists lay down doubt as the adjunct of justification. "Nor is it to be asserted" (says the Council of Trent, Session 6, chapter 9) "that those who are truly justified ought to settle within themselves, without any doubt whatever, that they are justified." This decree of the Pontiff, because it is opposed to true faith, the Orthodox rightly detest, no less than the preceding [errors], so that To God alone be the glory.
XX.
