That saying is illustrious: γνῶθι σεαυτόν, "Know thyself." But this knowledge is sought in vain unless we contemplate ourselves in the mirror of both Adams, and observe, in the first, our fall and ruin; in the second, our restoration and overflowing salvation, that from the former we may be spurred to a serious humbling of the soul before God, and from the latter to a godly gratitude toward Him. Wherefore we judge it not amiss to weigh, in a public disputation, that comparison of the first and second Adam.
Tesis I
Adam, vox Hebræa, in S. literis primùm homini, deinde urbi, attribuitur.
"Adam," a Hebrew word, is in the sacred writings attributed first to man, then to a city (Josh. 3:16).
Ideoque LXX interpretes γηγενής, & Hieronymus vulgatusque Psalmorum interpres, terrigena, consentaneè transtulerunt.
In the former sense it is named from its matter, Adamah (אֲדָמָה), that is, "earth" (as homo in Latin from humus, though some dissent). And so the Seventy render γηγενής ("earth-born"), and Jerome and the Vulgate Psalter-translator "terrigena," consistently (Gen. 2:7; 1 Cor. 15:47; Ps. 49:3). [Source apparatus also cites, for the homo/humus derivation and its dissenters, Quintilian, Institutio Oratoria 1.1.9, and, for the etymology, Jerome De nominibus Hebraicis and Jer. 32:20.]
Tesis III
Quo sensu hæc vox Adam, aut latius, aut strictius, usurpari solet.
In which sense this word "Adam" is used either more widely or more strictly.
Tesis IV
Latius quidem, animal rationale (marem aut feminam) notat: strictius verò, speciali aut singulari modo accipitur.
More widely, it denotes a rational animal (male or female); more strictly, it is taken in a special or a singular way (Gen. 1:27; Lev. 18:5; Num. 31:35).
In the special way, by opposition: either to God, [it designates] impious men; or, set against ish (τῷ ish) or geber, "a man" (that is, par excellence [κατ᾽ ἐξοχὴν] a powerful man and magnate), it designates the plebeian (Gen. 6:2; Ps. 49:3; 82:7; Job 14:10).
Tesis VI
Singulari verò modo, hominem primum notat: qui, proprio carens communi nomine, ob originis privilegium, appellatur. Ideoque sæpius articulo demonstrativo, ha (à quo propria hominum nomina abhorrere solent) insignitur, haadam, ille homo: ut Græcis ὁ ποιητής pro Homero (ut similia non pauca) excellentiæ denotandæ gratiâ, usurpatur.
In the singular way it denotes the first man, who, lacking a proper name, is called [by the common name] by the privilege of his origin. And therefore he is often marked with the demonstrative article ha- (from which proper names of men usually shrink), ha-adam, "that man", as among the Greeks ὁ ποιητής ("the Poet") is used for Homer (and not a few like cases), for the sake of denoting excellence (Gen. 2:18; 2:23, 25 &c.; 3:8, 9; 4:1).
Tesis VII
Utque Adam est Christi typus: sic ille primus homo, Adam; hic verò, postremus Adam, & secundus homo, comparatè, meritoque appellatur. Quemadmodum utrumque, cum in personâ, tum in attributis, collatio, partim convenientiæ, partim differentiæ, perspicuè declarabit.
And as Adam is a type of Christ, so that first man is called "Adam," and this one "the last Adam" and "the second man," comparatively and deservedly. As the comparison, both in person and in attributes, partly of agreement, partly of difference, will plainly declare of each (Rom. 5:14; 1 Cor. 15:45, 47).
In the person are to be observed the nature and the hypostasis, that is, τὸ ὑφιστάμενον ("that which subsists"), the personal subsistence.
Tesis IX
In naturâ quidem, convenientia est speciei, & partium. Speciei, quia utrimque natura est humana, uterque homo: partium, quia uterque, corpore mortali, & animâ immortali præditus, homo verus: & sine patre, citra generationem, Dei omnipotentiâ formatus.
In nature, the agreement is of species and of parts: of species, because on both sides the nature is human, each is man; of parts, because each, endowed with a mortal body and an immortal soul, is a true man, and without a father, apart from generation, formed by God's omnipotence (1 Cor. 15:45, 47; Gen. 1:27; 2:7; Luke 23:46; Gen. 2:7; Luke 1:35; Heb. 7:3).
The difference of the two natures is in number, and in the causes and adjuncts of the parts.
Tesis XI
In numero, quia Adami primi natura est unica humana; unde homo merus: in secundo altera etiam adest, divina: ideoque Deus verus, Immanuel, Deus Verbum caro factum, Deus patefactus in carne, & Dominus è cœlo, (oppositè Adamo primo) nominatur.
In number: because the first Adam's nature is a single, human [nature], whence he is mere man; in the second, another also is present, divine, and therefore he is called "true God," "Immanuel," "God the Word made flesh," "God manifest in the flesh," and "the Lord from heaven" (over against the first Adam) (1 Cor. 15:47; 1 John 5:20; Matt. 1:23; John 1:1, 14; 1 Tim. 3:16; 1 Cor. 15:47).
In the causes of the parts there is a difference, both by reason of the efficient and of the matter.
Of the efficient: because the first Adam's body and soul were formed by the second; the second's, by himself, as being true God, "through whom and unto whom all things were created" (John 1:3; Heb. 2:16; Col. 1:16).
Ac propterea, filius Adami, & filius hominis κατ᾽ ἐξοχὴν, promissus inde à paradiso, nominatur. Hæc de partium causis.
The near material difference of the body is that the first Adam's is from the earth; the second's, from the substance of the Virgin Mary, propagated from the first Adam. And therefore he is called "son of Adam" and, par excellence (κατ᾽ ἐξοχὴν), "son of man," promised from paradise onward (Gen. 2:7; 1 Cor. 15:47; Gen. 3:15; Luke 1:42; Heb. 2:14, 16; Luke 3:23, 38; John 5:27). These things concerning the causes of the parts.
In their adjuncts the difference is that the first Adam's body could, by keeping righteousness, not die; but the second's, keeping righteousness, had to die (Gen. 2:17; Rom. 5:12; Luke 24:26). And these things concerning the nature of each Adam, its agreement and difference.
Tesis XVI
In hypostasi verò, sive subsistentiâ personali, convenientia quidem est in numero, quia utrimque est unica; ideoque & unum ὑφιστάμενον, persona una, utrimque. Differentia verò est in modo.
In the hypostasis, or personal subsistence, the agreement is in number, because on both sides it is single; and so, on both sides, one subsistent (ὑφιστάμενον), one person. The difference is in the mode (Rom. 5:17, 18; 1 Cor. 15:21, 45).
For the first Adam's human nature had its own proper hypostasis: so that his body and soul constituted one person, or substance, singular, living, intelligent, incommunicable, not sustained by another, nor a part of another.
By contrast, the second Adam's human nature is destitute of its own hypostasis: as one which never and nowhere subsisted by itself and apart, outside the person of the Son, before it was assumed into the unity of the person. So that the natures are two, but the person single, one Christ, not two (1 Cor. 8:6; Eph. 4:5; 1 Tim. 2:5).
Tesis XIX
Altera collatio sita est, in personæ attributis: quæ in duos, quasi ramos, diffunduntur, nempe in dotes & effecta.
The second comparison lies in the attributes of the person, which are diffused into two, as it were, branches: namely, endowments (dotes) and effects (effecta).
In the endowments are to be observed both their species and their common end.
Tesis XXI
Species illæ potissimùm, in imagine Dei, & dominio in creaturas idoneo, continentur.
Those species are chiefly contained in the image of God and in a fit dominion over the creatures.
Tesis XXII
Imago autem Dei, est essentiæ illius spiritualis, & in primis virtutis, in creaturâ rationali, similitudo. Quâ in re, Adami primi & secundi, partim convenientia, partim differentia, est perspicua.
The image of God is the likeness, in a rational creature, of His spiritual essence and especially of [His] virtue. In which matter the agreement and difference of the first and second Adam is plain (Gen. 9:6; Eph. 4:24; Col. 3:10).
Tesis XXIII
Convenientia quidem, quia primùm utrique anima rationalis indita est divinitus: quæ essentia est spiritualis: eoque & vitâ immortali, & facultate geminâ, cum mentis, tum voluntatis, Deo similis. In quo, primus & immutabilis, bipartitæ imaginis Dei, gradus consistit.
Agreement: because first, to each a rational soul was divinely implanted, which is a spiritual essence, and thereby like God both in immortal life and in the twofold faculty of mind and will. In which consists the first and immutable degree of the twofold image of God.
Tesis XXIV
Deinde, præter essentiam spiritualem, addita virtus gemina, mentis, & voluntatis, ad earum perfectionem, alterumque imaginis Dei gradum, priori sublimiorem, statuendum.
Then, besides the spiritual essence, is added a twofold virtue, of mind and will, unto their perfection, and the second degree of the image of God, more sublime than the former, is to be established.
Tesis XXV
Virtus mentis, est agnitio Dei, & officii ergà ipsum, ad salutem sufficiens: quæ κατ᾽ ἐξοχὴν, veritas appellatur.
The virtue of the mind is the knowledge of God and of one's duty toward Him, sufficient for salvation; which is called, par excellence, "truth" (Col. 3:10; Eph. 4:24).
Tesis XXVI
Virtus voluntatis, est justitia, seu habitus rectæ voluntatis, jus suum cuique tribuendi: primùm Deo, ut creatori ac patri, quæ pietas & sanctitas dicta: deinde proximo, ut fratri creato ab eodem patre, eoque congeneri: quæ communi voce, justitia, per synecdochen, à sanctitate distincta, appellatur.
The virtue of the will is righteousness, or the habit of a right will of rendering to each his own: first to God, as Creator and Father, which is called piety and holiness; then to the neighbour, as a brother created by the same Father and thus akin, which by the common word is called justice, by synecdoche distinguished from holiness (Tit. 2:12; Luke 1:75; Eph. 4:24).
Tesis XXVII
Quibus virtutibus (quæ vulgò justitia originalis appellantur) primus Adamus, ad imaginem Dei conditus, fuit præditus.
With which virtues (commonly called original righteousness) the first Adam, created after the image of God, was endowed.
Tesis XXVIII
Differentia verò in eâdem comperitur duplex: una, ratione partis secundæ imaginis, seu virtutis: altera, ratione numeri imaginis.
The difference in the same [image] is found twofold: one, by reason of the second part of the image (i.e. virtue); the other, by reason of the number of the image.
Tesis XXIX
Virtus enim primi Adami, fuit mobilis; ut lapsus illius arguit: secundi verò, immobilis; partim ob personæ θεανθρώπου naturam, partim ob veritatis propheticarum de Christo, & officii illius mediatorii necessitatem.
For the virtue of the first Adam was mutable (mobilis), as his fall proves; but the second's, immutable, partly on account of the nature of the God-man (θεανθρώπου) person, partly on account of the necessity of the truth of the prophecies concerning Christ and of His mediatorial office (Isa. 9:6, 7; Dan. 9:24; Isa. 53:9, 11; Heb. 7:26).
Tesis XXX
Numerus deinde imaginis Dei differt: quod, in primo Adamo, unica fuerit imago, nempe creata (prout unica fuit natura) quâ Deo extitit ὁμοίωσις καὶ ὁμοίωσις, similis essentiâ ac sanctitate: in secundo verò, præter hanc, etiam increata est imago Dei Patris (prout altera quoque est natura increata) quâ ὁμοούσιος ejusdem est essentiæ, & sanctitatis. Unde, imago Dei invisibilis, & character hypostasis Dei Patris (utpote filius proprius, & unigenitus) appellatur. Ex quibus, collatio in imagine Dei, prima dote proposita, illustratur.
Then the number of the image of God differs: because in the first Adam there was a single image, namely created (as his nature was single), by which he was like God (ὁμοίωσις, likeness) in essence and holiness; but in the second, besides this, there is also the increate image of God the Father (as the other nature too is increate), by which, being consubstantial (ὁμοούσιος), he is of the same essence and holiness. Whence he is called "the image of the invisible God," and "the express character of the hypostasis of God the Father" (as being His proper Son and only-begotten) (Col. 1:15; Heb. 1:3; Rom. 8:32; John 1:14, 18). By which the comparison in the image of God, the first endowment set forth, is illustrated.
Tesis XXXI
Altera verò dos, est dominium in creaturas idoneum. Dominium, potestatem: idoneum, sapientiam & potentiam, & auctoritatem, usumque dominii necessariam, designat.
The second endowment is a fit dominion over the creatures. "Dominion" signifies power; "fit," the wisdom, power, and authority, and the use necessary for dominion.
The agreement of both Adams shines forth in this: that as to the first, as a type, was given empire over the earth, sea, and all animals, and the wisdom and power necessary for empire; so also to the second, adumbrated by the first's type, the son of man, the same is attributed (Ps. 8:5, 7; Gen. 1:26; 2:19; Ps. 8:5, 7; Heb. 2:6, 8).
Tesis XXXIII
Differentia verò est, in dominii terminis & modis.
The difference is in the bounds and modes of the dominion.
Tesis XXXIV
Termini enim imperii primi Adami, angustis terræ, maris, & animalium limitibus, fuerunt definiti: secundi verò Adami dominium, cæli, terræ, omniumque creaturarum latifundia comprehendit. Ideoque sapientiâ & potentiâ longè excellentiori stabilitum.
For the bounds of the first Adam's empire were defined by the narrow limits of earth, sea, and animals; but the second Adam's dominion comprehends the vast domains of heaven, earth, and all creatures, and is therefore established with a far more excellent wisdom and power (Gen. 1:28; Ps. 8:7, 8; Heb. 2:8; Eph. 1:21, 22).
Then the mode of the first Adam's dominion (according to the measure of one human nature) was single and measured; but the second's (according to the wisdom and power of the human and divine nature, distinctly finite and infinite) was twofold, measured and immeasurable (Rev. 1:8; 17:14). And these things concerning the first attribute of the person of each Adam, namely the endowments.
Tesis XXXVI
Alterum, nempe effecta, sunt duo: propagatio generis, & communicatio conditionis.
The other [head], namely the effects, are two: propagation of the race and communication of condition.
Tesis XXXVII
Prius, uxoris formatione, & liberorum ex eâ procreatione, continetur.
The former is contained in the formation of the wife and the procreation of children from her.
In the formation of the wife, the agreement is that, as the first Adam's wife was built from his sleeping body, so also the second's.
The difference is that, the first Adam sleeping a vital sleep, a carnal wife arose, flesh properly from his flesh, and bone from his bones; but from the second, sleeping the sleep of death, a spiritual wife, the Church, emerged, flesh (by a metaphor drawn from that type) from his flesh, and bone from his bones (Gen. 2:21, 22, 23; John 11:11, 13; Acts 20:28; Eph. 5:25, 30, 31, 32; 2 Cor. 11:2).
In the procreation of children from both, the agreement is that each Adam begot, from his wife, the mother of all living, children after his own image, to be nourished at the mother's breasts (Gen. 2:22; 3:20; 5:3).
The difference is that from the first Adam, from corruptible seed and by the force of nature, from Eve the mother of all living by bodily life, were begotten carnal children, after his vicious image, to be reared with carnal milk (Gen. 3:20; 5:3).
Tesis XLII
A secundo verò, ex semine sermonis Euangelii incorruptibili, ac virtute Spiritus Sancti, ex Ecclesiâ matre omnium, vitâ spirituali viventium, Spirituales liberi, secundùm imaginem virtutis ipsius, sunt regenerati, gemino veteris & novi Testamenti ubere, rationali lacte sincero, nutriendi.
But from the second [Adam], from the incorruptible seed of the word of the Gospel and by the power of the Holy Spirit, from the Church the mother of all who live the spiritual life, spiritual children, after the image of his virtue, are regenerated, to be nourished at the twin breast of the Old and New Testament, with rational, sincere milk (Jas. 1:18; 1 Pet. 1:23; John 3:5; Tit. 3:5; Gal. 4:26; Rom. 6:11, 13; John 1:12, 13; 2 Cor. 3:18; Eph. 4:24; Isa. 53:10; Heb. 8:18 [sic]; 1 Pet. 1:23; 2:2).
Whence two stocks of all men emerge. One, of all begotten according to the flesh, the first Adam; the other, of all begotten according to the spirit, the second Adam. And these things concerning the first effect of the person, namely the propagation of both races.
The other [effect] is the communication of condition to the children begotten; which on both sides agrees in genus, but differs in species.
Tesis XLV
Primus enim Adamus, & bona caduca, & deinde mala solida; secundus verò, beneficia tantùm, malis illis antidota longè excellentiora, communicat.
For the first Adam communicates both perishable goods and then solid evils; but the second, benefits only, antidotes to those evils, far more excellent (Rom. 5:15, 16, 17).
For the goods of the first were: the [merely] begun conservation of original righteousness; the obedience begun from its right use; and, following from both, peace with God, and the faculty of acquiring the right to the blessed and eternal life in heaven, but not that right itself, which was first to be acquired by perseverance to the appointed end (Lev. 18:5; Deut. 27:26).
The evils flowing from him are sin and death, attended by their retinue of various calamities.
Quæ utriusque Adami oppositio, distinctione pleniori, fiet illustrior.
By contrast, the benefits of the second Adam are righteousness consummated unto the end, and eternal life. Which opposition of the two Adams will become clearer by a fuller distinction.
Tesis XLIX
Peccatum enim, ab Adamo primo communicatum ipsius posteris (vi naturæ propagatis, seu generatis) generatim quidem est malum ab officio, ex jure Dei ipsi debito, dissentaneum; & ut Apostolus, à formâ deformi, describit, ἀνομία, à Lege declinatio: speciatim verò distribuitur, in primùm, & à primo ortum.
For sin, communicated by the first Adam to his posterity (propagated or begotten by the force of nature), is generally an evil of duty, at variance with the right owed to God; and, as the Apostle describes it from its deformed form, ἀνομία ("lawlessness"), a declining from the Law, but specifically it is divided into [sin] first, and [sin] arising from the first (1 John 3:4).
Tesis L
Primum (quod παράβασις transgressio, παράπτωμα lapsus, per metaphoram simul & κατ᾽ ἐξοχὴν dictum) est inobedientia Adami primi, quâ, per superbiam incredulam, inaccessam Dei similitudinem, Satanæ astu, & uxoris suasu, affectans, fructúsque vetiti præstantiâ allectus, eum comedit, ac se suósque posteros generandos, constituit peccatores, concessâque virtutis Dei similitudine privavit, & mortis condemnationem attulit.
The first (called παράβασις "transgression," παράπτωμα "lapse," by metaphor and par excellence) is the disobedience of the first Adam, by which, through unbelieving pride, aspiring after an inaccessible likeness to God, by Satan's craft and his wife's persuasion, and allured by the excellence of the forbidden fruit, he ate of it, and constituted himself and his posterity-to-be-begotten sinners, and deprived them of the granted likeness of God's virtue, and brought the condemnation of death. For "as through that one man sin entered into the world, and through sin death; and so death passed upon all men, in whom all sinned" (Rom. 5:12, 14; Gen. 3:5, 22; 2:17; 3:19; 1 John 3:4).
The antidote of that first sin is the universal obedience of the second Adam; by which, "though He was in the form of God, He counted it not robbery to be equal with God, but yet emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, and, found in fashion as a man, submitted Himself, becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the cross" (Phil. 2:6, 7, 8).
Tesis LII
By the merit of which universal obedience, being constituted righteous, we are absolved from the first Adam's sin and from our own. Hence the Apostle says: "For as through the disobedience of one man many were constituted sinners, so through the obedience of one many shall be constituted righteous" (Rom. 5:15, 16, 19).
Tesis LIII
Peccatum verò à primo illo ortum, est innata omnibus, ex Adamo primo generatis, privationis justitiæ originalis vitiositas: quâ, ad totius legis divinæ transgressionem, primùm propendent.
Sin arising from that first [sin] is the inborn viciousness, in all begotten from the first Adam, of the privation of original righteousness, by which they first incline to the transgression of the whole divine Law (Gen. 8:21; Eph. 2:3).
Tesis LIV
Ideoque, quum ea pravarum cupiditatum sit scaturigo, κατ᾽ ἐξοχὴν peccatum dicitur, & per metaphoram, vetus homo: ut, Adami primi vitiosi imago, & quasi spiritualis, à leproso patre, lepra (ipsius & posterorum, in ipso lapsorum, merito) propagata.
And therefore, since it is the source of depraved lusts, it is called par excellence "sin," and by metaphor "the old man", as the image of the vicious first Adam, and, as it were, a spiritual leprosy propagated from a leprous father (by the deserving of himself and of his posterity, fallen in him) (Rom. 6:6; Col. 3:9; Rom. 5:12).
Tesis LV
Quæ, cum nobis sit innata ab origine, originale peccatum, dici consuevit: & quia similis est morti (ob privationem justitiæ, quæ animæ, quasi anima & vita) mortui, in sacris literis, nervosâ quâdam metaphorâ, homines appellantur.
Which, being inborn in us from our origin, is wont to be called original sin; and because it is like death (on account of the privation of righteousness, which is to the soul as its soul and life), men are in the sacred writings, by a certain forceful metaphor, called dead (Gen. 8:21; Ps. 51:7; Eph. 2:3; Matt. 8:22; John 5:25).
Tesis LVI
Cujus mali medela, à secundi Adami beneficio, confertur. Nam mortis illius merito, vetus noster homo cum ipso crucifixus est, ut aboleatur corpus peccati, ne posthac nos serviamus peccato: & resurrectionis ejusdem efficaciâ, novus homo (secundi Adami justi imago) resurgit, nunquam moriturus: ut in novitate vitæ ambulemus. Atque hæc de primo malo, nempe peccato primi Adami, & remedio illius, à secundi beneficio.
The cure of which evil is conferred by the benefit of the second Adam. For by the merit of His death, "our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be abolished, that henceforth we should not serve sin"; and by the efficacy of His resurrection, the new man (the image of the righteous second Adam) rises, never to die, "that we might walk in newness of life" (Rom. 6:6; Eph. 4:24; Col. 3:10; Rom. 6:4, 5). And these things concerning the first evil, the sin of the first Adam, and its remedy from the benefit of the second.
Tesis LVII
Alterum malum, quod, præter peccatum, à primo Adamo posteris ipsius communicatum, est stipendium peccati, mors prima & secunda.
The second evil, which besides sin was communicated by the first Adam to his posterity, is the wage of sin, the first and second death (Rom. 6:23; Gen. 1:17 [sic, 2:17]; Rom. 5:12, 17; Rev. 21:8).
Amen, Amen!
The contrary benefit and remedy, given by the second Adam, is, through the merit of His obedience, and the efficacy of His resurrection, and of His Spirit, the inheritance and possession of eternal life, both of soul and of body. For, "being justified by His grace, that we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life"; and "having been consecrated, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him." "For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive." "And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall bear also the image of the heavenly." "For if by one offence death reigned through one, much more they who receive that overflowing grace and gift of righteousness shall reign in life, through one Jesus Christ." Amen, Amen! (Titus 3:7; Heb. 5:9; 1 Cor. 15:22; 15:49; Phil. 3:21; Rom. 5:17).
Amin, Amin!
