Pendahuluan

Cujus, hâc tempestate, succinctum, in Legis divinæ (quæ rectam sanctæ vitæ normam complectitur) & falsæ atque impuræ doctrinæ Papalis, repugnantiâ, specimen proponemus. Quâ in re, ad publicæ dissertationis materiam singula Legis præcepta, percurremus.

It is no great wonder that the Pontifical Church so runs riot as to claim for itself, and indeed for itself alone, with vast arrogance, the title of the holy Church of Christ and "pillar of the truth," though it has scarcely retained the shadow of the ancient and holy Roman Church. For as harlots brazen their brow and dare anything, so that "great whore" has shaken off all shame. This is plainly proved when the true doctrine of the true Church is set beside the false dogmas of the Romanists. Of that contradiction, between the divine Law (which embraces the right rule of a holy life) and the false and impure Papal doctrine, we shall in these times set out a compendious specimen. And in this matter, for the material of a public disputation, we shall run through the individual precepts of the Law.

Tesis I: hukum ke-1

In quo, ea propria Dei gloria, quæ à Davide, Deo tribuitur; virgini Mariæ, horrendâ impietate accommodatur.

For by the first commandment it is prescribed that Jehovah is to be held for the one true God, and His proper glory rendered to Him, that is, He is to be pursued with the highest love, and faith, trust, and hope to be placed in Him alone; He alone to be adored and religiously worshipped. Against this the Romanists: as many as are the angels in heaven, and the saints approved by the Pope, so many are the "alien gods" to whom they ascribe that glory proper to God, as their fixed formulae of prayer prove, and above all the invocation of the Virgin Mary, both elsewhere and in the Psalter of the Virgin Mary composed by its author Cardinal Bonaventure (whom the Pope enrolled in the number of the saints). In which work that proper glory of God, which is rendered by David to God, is with horrid impiety transferred to the Virgin Mary.

Tesis II: hukum ke-2

Secundo præcepto imaginum cultus, omnisque ἐθελοθρησκεία prohibetur. Contra Pontificii, idololatriâ multiplici, & traditionum suarum, partim superstitione, partim impietate, eidem adversantur: ut publica ipsorum decreta, & quotidiana experientia, demonstrat. In quâ impius idoli Missatici cultus atque adoratio hostiæ ipsorum, excellit: & deinde adoratio crucis, de quâ Thomas Aquinas, Sanctus apud Pontificios, Sum. Theologiæ par. 3. quæst. 25. Illi exhibemus latriæ cultum, in quo ponimus spem salutis. Sed in cruce Christi ponimus spem salutis: cantat enim Ecclesia, O crux ave spes unica, hoc passionis tempore: auge piis justitiam, reisque dona veniam. Ergo crux Christi adoranda est, adoratione latriæ.

By the second commandment the worship of images, and all will-worship (ἐθελοθρησκεία), is forbidden. Against this the Romanists oppose it by a manifold idolatry, and by their traditions, partly superstition, partly impiety, as their public decrees and daily experience demonstrate. In which the impious cult of the Mass-idol and the adoration of their host stands foremost; and then the adoration of the cross, concerning which Thomas Aquinas, a "Saint" among the Romanists (Summa Theologiae III, q. 25), [argues]: "To that we render the worship of latria, in which we place the hope of salvation. But in the cross of Christ we place the hope of salvation, for the Church sings, O cross, hail, our only hope, in this Passiontide: increase righteousness to the godly, and grant pardon to the guilty. Therefore the cross of Christ is to be adored, with the adoration of latria."

Tesis III: hukum ke-3

Tertio præcepto, nominis Dei sanctificatio, imperatur: Contra Pontificii, variis id modis polluunt. Nam inter cætera, horrendis incantationibus, salem, aquam, cereos, cineres, ramos, campanas, agnos (ut impiè vocant) Dei, aliaque magiæ Papalis instrumenta, indigna nominis Dei profanatione, consecrant, & tanquam salutis subsidia, commendant. Quæ inprimis patent, ex Rationali divinorum officiorum Durandi, episcopi: & Sacrarum ceremoniarum Romanæ Ecclesiæ, libro Christophori Marcelli, episcopi: & Christianis Institutionibus Costeri, Papæ auctoritate, & indulgentiis impuris, munitis: denique ex Pastorali Romano, & Libro de fuga dæmonum, aliisque probatis, apud Pontificios, monumentis.

By the third commandment the sanctifying of God's name is enjoined. Against this the Romanists defile it in various ways. For among other things, by horrid incantations they consecrate salt, water, candles, ashes, palms, bells, "lambs" of God (as they impiously call them), and other instruments of Papal magic, with an unworthy profanation of God's name, and commend them as helps to salvation. These appear especially from the Rationale of the Divine Offices of Durandus the bishop; from the book On the Sacred Ceremonies of the Roman Church by Christophorus Marcellus the bishop; and from the Christian Institutions of Costerus, fortified with the Pope's authority and impure indulgences; finally from the Roman Pastoral, the Book on the Flight of Demons, and other monuments approved among the Romanists.

1. sect. 7. recensetur.

Of which profanation this one example concerning that "Lamb of God" (Agnus Dei) may suffice, which is recounted by the Corcyrean [Corfu] bishop Marcellus (On the Sacred Ceremonies, bk. 1, sect. 7): "We read," he says, "that Urban V, the Supreme Pontiff, sent to the Emperor of the Greeks three Agnus Dei with the verses written below": Balsam and clean wax, with the water of the chrism, make the lamb, a great gift I give you: as if born from the font, sanctified through mystic rites. It drives lightnings from above, and every malignant thing; it breaks sin, as does the Blood of Christ, and it stings; the pregnant is preserved, and at once the birth delivered; it renders gifts to the worthy, its power quenches fire; carried purely, it snatches [one] from the waves of the flood. And this very recital is itself a refutation of the profanation of God's name.

IV.

By the fourth commandment the sanctifying of the Sabbath is prescribed, for the public and right worship of God. Against this the Romanists have consecrated many feasts, temples, and altars to their "Saints", whom, enrolled by the Pope in the order of the Saints, they adore and invoke. Of whom several either never existed, such as St Christopher, or were impious, such as St George, an Arian and cruel persecutor of the Church, as even Caesar Baronius, overcome by the truth, acknowledged in the Martyrology of the Roman Church.

Tesis VI: hukum ke-4 (lanjutan)

Deinde varios etiam, publicæ ac superstitiosæ Religionis, modos, diversosque ministrorum Ecclesiæ Ordines, præter Dei verbum, Ethnicorum imitatione (ut Durandus in Rationali divin. officiorum lib. 2. cap. 1. profitetur) statuerunt: suisque (ut vocant) Annatibus, Pontifices divendunt: ut experientia comprobat.

Then also they have established various modes of public and superstitious religion, and diverse Orders of the Church's ministers, beyond God's word, in imitation of the heathen (as Durandus professes in the Rationale of the Divine Offices, bk. 2, ch. 1); and by their so-called Annates the Popes sell them off, as experience confirms.

At Fredericus; Non tibi, inquit, sed Petro, cui successor es, pareo. Et summus Pontifex respondit; Et mihi & Petro. Imitatus egregiè Satanam præeuntem, Matth. 4. 9.

By the fifth commandment honour and obedience is enjoined toward parents, whether they be such by nature or by office and charge (as magistrates especially are). Against this the Romanists teach that ecclesiastical persons are exempt, this precept being violated, from the observance and obedience owed to the Magistrate and to the fathers of the fatherland (Rom. 13:1). So much so that the Pope (his own doctors approving it) thrusts down Princes, Kings, and Emperors to the kissing of his feet, with an impious and more-than- barbaric insolence, as Bishop Marcellus describes the customary practice (On the Sacred Ceremonies, sect. 13). Nay, not content with this alone, the Pope trod down with his pressed foot the neck of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, prostrate at his feet. This Philippus Bergomas the Monk describes in these words, in his Supplement to the Supplement of Chronicles: "This covenant therefore being struck, Pope Alexander at once went to the doors of the church of St Mark the Evangelist, and there, with all the people standing by, commanded the Emperor to prostrate himself on the ground and again beg pardon. This done, Pope Alexander, pressing the Emperor's neck with his foot, said: It is written, 'Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk, and shalt tread down the lion and the dragon.' But Frederick said: 'Not to thee, but to Peter, whose successor thou art, do I submit.' And the Supreme Pontiff answered: 'To me and to Peter [alike].'", thus admirably imitating Satan, who went before him (Matt. 4:9).

Tesis VIII: hukum ke-6

Sextum præceptum, homicidium vetat: contra Pontificii belli sacri obtentu, & Hierosolymis occupandis, Pontifici licere statuunt infinitam penè infidelium multitudinem (nihil tale promeritam) ferro tollere: multasque Christianorum myriades hostium lanienæ exponere: ut historia belli sacri demonstrat.

The sixth commandment forbids homicide. Against this the Romanists determine that, under the pretext of a "holy war" and of occupying Jerusalem, it is lawful for the Pope to destroy by the sword an almost infinite multitude of unbelievers (who have deserved no such thing), and to expose many myriads of Christians to the butchery of the enemy, as the history of the holy war [Crusade] demonstrates.

Perintah keenam melarang pembunuhan.

Tesis IX: hukum ke-6 (lanjutan)

Deinde horrendam Inquisitorum suorum tyrannidem (in numerosâ, Euangelium Christi profitentium atque innocenter viventium, turbâ, variis modis cruciandâ ac necandâ) quasi sanctam justamque comprobant.

Then they approve, as though holy and just, the horrid tyranny of their Inquisitors, a numerous throng of those who profess the Gospel of Christ and live innocently being tortured and put to death in various ways.

Tesis X: hukum ke-7

The seventh commandment of God's Law approves chastity and lawful marriage for all (Heb. 13:4), and indeed prescribes it for those who lack the gift of continence (1 Cor. 7:9). Against this the Romanists not only prefer the celibacy of all ministers of the word, priests, and monks (though many are destitute of the gift of continence) to marriage, but even impudently affirm that their fornication is better than their marriage. For thus the standard-bearer of the Romanists, Cardinal Bellarmine: "It is a greater evil to marry thus than to fornicate; because he who so marries renders himself incapable of keeping his vow, which he who fornicates does not do." Thus he, On Monks, bk. 2, ch. 34.

1. De majoritate & obedientiâ c. 1. unam sanctam) dari, minui, auferri posse statuunt. Quemadmodum reverâ sæpius justis Dominis Pontificum sententiâ illâ erepta, & injustis dominis tradita, Italiæ, Germaniæ, Galliæ, Navarræ, Indiarum, Judææ, aliorumque regnorum exempla, & Pontificiorum historiæ evincunt.

The eighth commandment forbids theft and every unjust turning-away of another's goods, and commands that to each be rendered and left his own. Against this the Romanists not only do not render to Caesar what is Caesar's, but on the contrary determine that his kingdoms, and those of other kings, can, by the supreme power and arbitrary will of the Pope, be given, diminished, and taken away (Extravagantes Communes, bk. 1, On Majority and Obedience, ch. 1, [the bull] Unam Sanctam). As indeed the examples of Italy, Germany, France, Navarre, the Indies, Judaea, and other kingdoms, often snatched by that papal sentence from their just lords and handed to unjust lords, and the histories of the Romanists prove.

The ninth commandment forbids false witness against one's neighbour, and enjoins that truth and a pledged faith be kept. Against this the Romanists not only perfidiously violate a pledged faith (when it is expedient to them), but even define, on the authority of the Council of Constance, Session 19, that faith need not be kept with heretics.

Tesis XIII: hukum ke-10

Decimum præceptum, concupiscentiam, à charitate proximi discrepantem, prohibet, & Apostolus Paulus disertè (tanquam legis divinæ transgressionem) peccatum esse asserit Rom. 7. 7. Contra Pontificii, Concupiscentiam, in Concilio Tridentino Sessione quintâ, peccatum esse negant, & aliter sentientibus, anathema denuntiant.

The tenth commandment forbids concupiscence that departs from love of neighbour, and the Apostle Paul expressly asserts it to be sin (as a transgression of the divine Law), Rom. 7:7. Against this the Romanists, in the Council of Trent, Session 5, deny that concupiscence is sin, and pronounce anathema on those who think otherwise.

Wherefore, from this manifest contradiction between the divine Law and the human doctrine of the Romanists, it clearly shines forth that, whereas God has commanded that all the precepts of the Law be kept, and has threatened a curse upon those who do not abide in all things (Deut. 27:26; Gal. 3:10), the Roman Pope and the Romanist theologians have, on the contrary, striven by their opposed dogmas to leave no commandment of the divine Law free from violation.

Tesis XV: kesimpulan (2)

Quapropter quum Christi Ecclesia, vocem ipsius audiat ac sequatur: Contraque Pontificii, ei adversentur, inde deducimus hæc [Consectaria].

Wherefore, since Christ's Church hears and follows His voice, while the Romanists on the contrary oppose it, from this we deduce the following [corollaries]:

1. That the Pontifical Church is not the bride of Christ, much less the Catholic Church. 2. Nor Apostolic. 3. Nor holy. 4. Nor is the Roman Pope the head of the true Church; nor a shepherd, but a devourer and a wolf, and therefore to be fled by all who would take counsel for their own salvation.

1. Bahwa Gereja Kepausan bukan mempelai Kristus, apalagi Gereja Katolik. 2. Juga bukan Apostolik. 3. Juga bukan kudus. 4.
