Gomarus, Disputatio V: Beberapa pertanyaan tentang nama-nama Allah
Tiga pertanyaan: apakah Elohim jamak dengan kata tunggal menandakan beberapa pribadi, apakah Adonai hanya dipakai untuk Allah, dan apakah perbuatan baik layak memperoleh hidup kekal.
Tesis I
A well-known question, and most worthy of explanation, is this: whether the plural word Elohim, when it is construed with some singular word, therefore signifies several persons? On this there is some disagreement among those who agree in asserting the Trinity of the divine persons. For some affirm it; but others deny it: of the Romanists, Tostatus, Cajetan, Sixtus of Siena, Bellarmine, Pererius; of ours, Calvin, Daneau, Mercier, Drusius, Pareus, distinguished men. Their opinion, resting on weighty reasons, we judge is not rashly to be preferred to the former.
For the first reason is that the contrary opinion is demonstrated by no solid argument, and has no patron or informant among the orthodox Fathers, the Hebrews, or the Christian doctors before the Master of the Sentences of the Romanist synagogue, Peter Lombard.
II.
The discourse of this Master of the Sentences on the matter (bk. 1, dist. 1, f.) not only suffers from unskilfulness, in that it derives Elohim from the singular El, but also overturns itself by a manifest contradiction. For after saying that in Gen 1:1 by "God" the Father is signified, he nevertheless adds that Elohim refers to a plurality of persons. If that is true, it does not denote the Father, who is one person; or if it does denote him, it is not referred to several persons.
III.
The second general reason is that there is among the Hebrews a customary and frequent enallage by which the plural word Elohim, construed with a singular word, is used in a singular sense, both of God and of others. Every single example of these is so many arguments.
IV.
Tesis V
V. De Deo quidem, vel Patre, vel Filio. De Patris persona certò accipitur Psal. 45.8. 61.1. declaratur.
Of God, namely either the Father or the Son. Of the person of the Father it is certainly taken in Ps 45:8, Elohim, your Elohim, has anointed you, that is, God, your God, as it is translated and expounded in Heb 1:9. For the one anointing is the Father; the anointed, the Son; the oil of anointing, the operation of the Holy Spirit, as is also declared in Isa 61:1.
V. Pertama, tentang Allah, entah Bapa entah Anak.
Of the person of the Son it is said in Ps 45:7, Your throne, O Elohim, that is, O God, as Heb 1:8 expounds it and refers it to the Son. Next, Hos 1:7, I will save them by Jehovah their Elohim, that is, their God, Christ. Finally, in Judg 13 the one called Angel of Jehovah in v. 21 is named Elohim in v. 22 and Jehovah in v. 23. Hence it is clear that by such a construction of the word Elohim with a singular, several persons are by no means designated.
VI.
That the word Elohim is used in a singular sense, by the genius of the Hebrew language, not only of God but also of others in an entirely similar phrase, will be evident from the following examples of Holy Scripture.
VII.
Reg. 18. 27. Quia Elohim ipse: hoc est, Deus est. 3. de variis singularibus falsis diis 1. Reg. 11. 33. Asthoreth Elohe Sidoniorum, Cemosch Elohe Moab, Milcom Elohe filiorum Ammon.
First, of single false gods. That it is so taken is shown (1) by the golden calf, spoken of in Exod 32:13 [sic], which in v. 31 is called Elohe zahab, that is, a golden god; as is said of the same in Neh 9:18, They made a calf and said, This is your Elohim, that is, your God, who brought you out; (2) of Baal, Judg 6:31, If he is Elohim; and of the same, 1 Kgs 18:27, For he is Elohim, that is, he is a god; (3) of various single false gods, 1 Kgs 11:33, Ashtoreth the Elohe of the Sidonians, Chemosh the Elohe of Moab, Milcom the Elohe of the children of Ammon.
VIII. 3. Tentang berbagai ilah palsu yang tunggal, 1Raj. 11:33, Asytoret Elohe orang Sidon, Kemos Elohe Moab, Milkom Elohe bani Amon.
Tesis IX
IX. Secundo de singulari homine Mose, dicitur Exod. 4. 16. Tu eris ei in Elohim & cap. 7. 1. dedi te Elohim Pharaoni. X. Denique 1. Sam. 28. 13. spectrum Samuelis Diabolicum vocatur Elohim: & de eodem quaerit Saul; Qua figura ejus? Ac quamvis & vocans & quaerens, fuerint impii, Hebraeae tamen linguae suae morem designarunt.
IX. Second, of a single man, Moses, it is said in Exod 4:16, You shall be to him as Elohim, and in 7:1, I have made you Elohim to Pharaoh. X. Finally, in 1 Sam 28:13 the diabolical spectre of Samuel is called Elohim; and of the same Saul asks, What is his form? And although both the one calling and the one asking were ungodly, they nonetheless displayed the usage of their Hebrew tongue.
IX.
The third general reason is that the same kind of phrase (from which they conclude several persons) is frequently found also in other nouns of plural number that are attributed to God, or even to creatures. [fol. 14 / PDF p. 845, left column ends]
XI.
61. v. 1. Spiritus Adonai Iehovae super me: ubi Adonai, dominum & quidem Patrem notat, ut distincta illius à Spiritu & Filio relatio, & Christus Luc. 4. 18. 21. ostendit.
For Adonai is a name of God which is of plural number and would denote "lords", but by enallage, in a singular sense, denotes "lord": as when it is said of the person of the Father alone in Isa 61:1, The Spirit of Adonai Jehovah is upon me; where Adonai denotes a lord, and indeed the Father, as his distinct relation to the Spirit and the Son, and Christ himself in Luke 4:18, 21, show.
XII.
Next, Prov 1:20, where it is said chochmoth, "wisdoms" (for "wisdom", Prov 8:1), sings and utters her voice; and 9:1, chochmoth has built: that the Son of God is designated is plain, and acknowledged among the assertors of the Trinity.
XIII.
So also the plural words gnhosaich, "your makers", and bognhalaich, "your husbands", joined with a singular, are used in a singular sense: as Isa 54:5, Your husbands, your makers, Jehovah; and Job 35:10, Eloach gnhosai (that is, God my Makers) who gives songs. For although the Father is creator, and the Son creator, and the Holy Spirit creator, yet they are not three creators, but one creator, God.
XIV. Demikian pula kata-kata jamak gnhosaich, para pembuatmu, dan bognhalaich, para suamimu, bila digabung dengan kata tunggal, dipakai dalam makna tunggal: seperti Yes. 54:5, Bognhalaich gnhosaich Yehova, dan Ayb. 35:10, Eloach gnhosai (yaitu Allah pembuatku) yang memberikan nyanyian-nyanyian. Sebab walaupun Bapa adalah pencipta, dan Anak pencipta, dan Roh Kudus pencipta, namun mereka bukan tiga pencipta, melainkan satu pencipta, Allah.
Tesis XV
XV.
Likewise the word Adonim, "lords" for "lord", is used with a singular word and in a singular sense, both of God and of men. First of God: Mal 1:6, If I am Adonim, that is, lord. For, as Athanasius says in the Creed: the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord, and yet they are not three lords, but there is one Lord.
XV.
21. v. 4. 6. 8.
Next, of men it is used very frequently in the same phrase and in a singular sense, according to the usage of the Hebrew language: as in Gen 39:20 it is said of Potiphar, Joseph's adone ("lords", i.e. master) took him; and of Joseph himself, in the same book, 42:30, The adone of the land spoke; likewise it is used of any common master whatever, Exod 21:4, 6, 8.
XVI.
Moreover, owners are called Baalim, "lords", in a singular sense: as Exod 21:29 and 36, and its baalau has not kept it in, that is, its owner. Many other constructions of this kind with other words (though not used with equal frequency) we pass over, because these suffice abundantly to establish that a plural sense cannot be demonstrated from the force of such a construction (a plural noun with a singular).
XVII.
Finally, since the singular Eloach signifies "God", if its plural Elohim in such a construction denotes several, it will denote "Gods", because a plural differs from its singular only in number, not in signification. But this is absurd; as Athanasius also rightly says in the Creed: as we are compelled by Christian truth to confess each person singly to be God and Lord, so we are forbidden by the catholic religion to say there are three Gods or Lords.
XVIII.
Tesis XIX
XIX.
There follows another question, easier indeed than the former, yet worth discussing briefly, lest in debate with the adversaries of Christ's deity we become entangled (as has been found to happen to some). It is this: whether the name Adonai, with qamets at the end, is said in Holy Scripture of God alone? Or sometimes also of creatures? The former is commonly laid down by most; but by others it is more accurately denied. The latter, applying a distinction, we assert can be both affirmed and denied.
XIX.
It can be affirmed by reason of the same sound of the word; but denied by reason of the different nature of the same. For when it is said of God, the last [vowel] is qamets of itself and always; but when it is said of a creature, the same arises by accident of the pause, or of a disjunctive accent, which lengthens the short vowel patach into qamets: as Gen 18:3 and 19:18 are clear examples.
XX.
Further, when it is said of God, Adonai is always a simple word and signifies only "lord". But when it is said of a creature, either in fact or in the opinion of the speaker, it is sometimes simple, as in Gen 18:3 in the words of Abraham, who, thinking him a man who met him, calls him Adonai, "lord", by enallage of number, as he shows by the singular construction when he says, if I have found favour in your eyes; but sometimes the word is compounded of the noun and an affixed pronoun and signifies "my lords", as in the words of Lot by which he addresses the two angels, Gen 19:18. [fol. 14 / PDF p. 845; catchword "XXII. Ter-"]
XXI.
Tesis XXII
XXII. ⟨Te⟩rtia quaestio est de bonis hominum operibus; An iis vitam aeter⟨n⟩am mereantur? Pontificii asserunt. Orthodoxi verò ⟨me⟩ritò negant: idque inter caeteras, hisce etiam rationibus demo⟨nst⟩ratur.
The third question concerns the good works of men: whether by them they merit eternal life? The Romanists assert it. The orthodox rightly deny it; and this is demonstrated, among other reasons, also by these.
XXII.
First, because even if the good works of men were perfect, they still could not merit eternal life, for two reasons. The first is that they are owed to God; the other, that they are unequal to eternal life.
XXIII.
Tesis XXIV
XXIV. Debita quidem, jure duplici. Primum ⟨co⟩mmuni creationis ac benignae conservationis: deinde proprio ⟨re⟩demptionis per Christum: ideoque iis praestitis, nihil mereri possunt apud Deum, nedum vitam aeternam, ut Christus asserit Luc. 17. 10. Quum feceritis omnia quae praecepi vobis, dicite servi inutiles sumus: nam quod debuimus facere, fecimus.
Owed, by a twofold right: first, the common right of creation and of kind preservation; then, the proper right of redemption through Christ. Therefore, when they have been performed, they can merit nothing with God, much less eternal life, as Christ asserts in Luke 17:10: When you have done all that I commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: for we have done what we ought to do.
XXIV.
Unequal to eternal life, because they are works of a finite nature and of finite and slight value and duration, which bring God no advantage; whereas eternal life consists in a beatitude ineffable and unsearchable (1 Cor 2:9) and never to be ended. So that what the Apostle says of the sufferings of Christians (that those we suffer in the present time are not worthy to be compared with the future glory to be revealed in us) applies by the same reason to all the good works of men, even if they were perfect.
XXV.
Tesis XXVI
XXVI. Secundò verò, quia & numero, & modo ac gradu imperfecta sunt, multo minus aliquid apud Deum praemii mereri possunt. Quippe numero imperfecta sunt, quia multa bona opera à Deo mandata desunt: & mala adsunt. Nemo enim est qui non peccet. 1. Reg. 8. 46. Prov. 20. 9. & 1. Joh. 1. 8. imo in multis labimur omnes Jac. 3. 2. & Gal. 5. 17.
Second, because they are imperfect both in number and in mode and degree, much less can they merit any reward with God. They are imperfect in number, because many good works commanded by God are lacking, and evil ones are present: for there is no one who does not sin (1 Kgs 8:46; Prov 20:9; 1 John 1:8); indeed, in many things we all stumble (Jas 3:2). They are imperfect in mode and degree, because they are not carried out in that manner and integrity of zeal, from the whole heart, the whole soul, and all one's strength (as God commanded, Luke 10:27), on account of the resistance of the flesh against the spirit (Rom 7:23; Gal 5:17). [fol. 15 / PDF p. 846, left column; right column follows]
XXVI.
27. 27. & Gal. 3. 10. & stipendium peccati mors; donum vero Dei per Christum vita aeterna Rom. 6. 23.
Hence the orthodox, against the Romanists, rightly conclude that if we consider the merit of our good works by itself alone, it is in truth curse and eternal death. For cursed is he who does not continue in all things written in the book of the Law, to do them (Deut 27:27 [sic, i.e. 27:26]; Gal 3:10); and the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God through Christ is eternal life (Rom 6:23).
XXVII.
Tesis XXVIII
XXVIII. Atque hinc necessariò sequitur, nullum homi⟨nem⟩ peccatorem suorum operum merito, ab accusatione Legis abso⟨lv⟩i ac justificari coram Deo.
And hence it necessarily follows that no sinful man is absolved from the accusation of the Law and justified before God by the merit of his own works.
XXVIII.
N. 2. An alibi ita in S. literis usurpetur? N. 3. An δικαιόω apud Graecos auctores priscos, eo sensu accipiatur? N. 5. An demonstrari possit, voces Schamajim & Erets Hebraeas, ab alia lingua affini derivatas? N. Idemque (bonis auctoribus & rationibus non contemnendis nixi) de Chaldaeis vocibus, Sabbeca, Psanterin & sumphonia Dan. 3. (quas à Graecis traductas ad Chaldaeos vulgò censent) statuimus.
1. Whether the Hebrew hitsdik or tsiddek, or the Greek δικαιόω, in Holy Scripture, where the justification of the sinner before God is treated, signifies to make the soul righteous by an inward righteousness, as the Romanists contend? Denied. 2. Whether it is so used elsewhere in Holy Scripture? Denied. 3. Whether δικαιόω is taken in that sense among the ancient Greek authors? Chemnitz consistently denied it, and has not so far been refuted by any example from his adversaries, however learned. 4. Whether it can be proved that the word Eloah (whence the plural Elohim) is not primitive but derived from another word, either Hebrew or of another language? Denied. 5. Whether it can be demonstrated that the Hebrew words shamayim and erets are derived from another, cognate language? Denied. And we hold the same (relying on good authors and on reasons not to be despised) concerning the Chaldee words sabbeca, psanterin, and sumphonia in Dan 3, which are commonly thought to have been carried over from the Greeks to the Chaldeans. [fol. 15 / PDF p. 846]
KOROLARIA. 1.
